Wellington-based leathergoods brand Yu Mei first captured the hearts of Kiwi women with their stunning bags and accessories several seasons ago and they’re just dropped their first pre-season collection titled La Piscine. The range is for the Resort 2017 season and perfectly timed with beautiful summer days here in New Zealand. This collection is smaller than their full Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer collections, instead it focuses on three personalities/bag styles; Judy, Vi and Ch’lita. Each is named after someone special to the Yu Mei brand, Judy and Vi are designer Jessie Wong’s grandmother and great grandmother respectively, while Ch’lita Collins is an independent 17 year old and friend of the brand. All three are fearless women who challenge the status quo and Yu Mei have released three short films that capture their personalities. With each film vignette answering the question ‘What’s your bag’ – a double entendre from the 60’s more commonly used to ask ‘what’s your deal/personality?’.
The elegant leather bags are available in a striking colour palette of sorbet, Klein blue and black with the designer inspired by a trip to the incredible Pompidou Museum in Paris with her production manager Adrian. “We were showed through David Hockney’s retrospective and the contemporary galleries. There was such a bright array of colours used by artists who all pushed the envelope in the art world, speaking to new ideas and challenging what had come before,” adds Wong. The playfulness of the designer’s colour choices translates beautifully into covetable accessories that are luxurious and contemporary.
