Winter Wrap Up

Shoulder Pads
The 80’s came back in a big way this winter with the return of the shoulder pad. I never thought I’d be one to champion big shoulders, but this has definitely been one of my favourite trends this winter.

Merino is the old favourite – just so cosy for winter. taylor Boutique’s Venetian Cowl was the perfect example of how merino can not only be functional, but fashionable. The Venetian Cowl was a winter favourite for its easy wearability, functionality and warmth. Made from 100% New Zealand merino, it was definitely a piece to be worn with your favourite jeans, snuggled up next to the fire, or to pull on over an elegant dress for those chilly winter occasions.

You can’t do a winter wrap up without coats. This season saw cute coats in bright colours, stepping away from the more traditional winter blacks and greys. This one from Karen Walker was my absolute favourite. Ashley Fogel also did a coat in a fun shade of fuchsia. We also saw military inspired detailing in both coats and jackets.

The combat boot was a clear favourite style for boots this winter, and looks like it will continue its popularity for summer, with some designers pairing pretty summer frocks with tough combat boots. The 'winter wedge' was another key look for winter footwear. Check out FashioNZ blogger Pip's take on why the winter wedge has been hot this season.

Evening wear
For evening and formal wear, jewel tones and one shoulder dresses were winners. We picked our favourite looks in our ball season trends article.

Knitwear went oversized and slouchy this winter, perfect for rugging up against the winter chill.

Lonely Hearts

We saw less of the drab, traditional winter hues this year, with many designers introducing a pop of colour into their collections.
