New Zealand brands are manufacturing reusable masks. Image supplied.
As New Zealand is currently now in Alert Level 3 for Auckland and Alert Level 2 for the rest of the country the government has strongly encouraged Kiwis to wear face masks when out and about in public (especially in crowded places) to help control the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
While there are currently disposable face masks available at supermarkets and pharmacies (stocks are being replenished as quickly as possible) a host of local brands have also stepped up to make reusable face masks that are meant to be worn once and then washed thoroughly. If you’re going for the reusable kind the current advice is to buy two so you can have a clean one available while one is being washed.
Some brands like Annah Stretton have been manufacturing masks for months now and her factory in Morrinsville has been producing up to 30,000 reusable masks a day. Some of the other manufacturers now making masks locally are The Pattern Table, Juliette Hogan, Maaike, Jojo Ross, Taylor and more. Please be aware that some of these manufacturers are having drops of face masks sell out quickly but are working as quickly as they can to replenish stock. We’ll update this story as we hear of more local face masks being made too.
Why does wearing a face mask matter? Face masks are effective as they create a barrier between your mouth and nose and anyone around you. They do this by helping reduce the respiratory droplets from your coughs and sneezes reaching others and anyone else’s reaching your nose and mouth.
You can find out more about face masks and how to wear them safely on the New Zealand government’s Covid-19 website.
