In the world of beauty, you may have heard the word ‘dermaplaning’ crop up in more recent years – the treatment being praised around the globe for its ability to leave the face smooth, exfoliated and glowing. To dermaplan the face essentially means to shave the skin with a single razor blade, thus removing peach fuzz and dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. This treatment is usually performed in-salon and can come with a hefty price tag – especially if you are having the treatment done every two to three weeks. But there is now a way you can get your salon-quality treatment from the comfort of your own home, without breaking the bank.

Introducing, Bondi Blades.

Born out of Victoria’s year of Covid lockdowns, Ali Clarke launched Bondi Blades as a cost-effective, lockdown friendly and time-saving alternative to salon dermaplaning treatments.

Ali was six months pregnant with her daughter when she had a dermaplaning facial in a salon and quickly saw the benefits. However, with treatments costing upwards of $150, that needed to be repeated twice a month, she knew there had to be a better way. Ali saw her brand boom during 2020, partially due to salons being closed, the newfound interest in at-home beauty and the added pressure of constant zoom calls making our skin front and centre like never before. She also has seen an influx of orders from Kiwis looking to get salon-quality treatments without the hefty price tags.

“The results are incredible on your skin. For most customers it means you don’t have to wear makeup the majority of the time and when you do the results are just flawless.” Says Ali.

Dermaplaning helps remove the peach fuzz from the top layer of the skin, leaving the skin silky smooth for better product penetration and flawless makeup application.  Bondi Blades is a gentle and pain-free tool that can be used to shape your eyebrow and remove any unwanted hair. It also creates a more even skin tone and leaves your skin healthy and glowing.

We were lucky enough to have a Bondi Blades kit sent to us to trial and let me tell you – I won’t be going back into the salon for this treatment as the results I got at home was just as good as a professional service. The kit comes with three Bondi Blade tools, each tool comprising of a single, sharp blade moulded into an easy to use handle. The instructions told me to cleanse my face, then apply an oil-based product, such as a Rosehip oil to the areas I would be dermaplaning to help the tool glide easily across my skin.

Bondi Blades’ dermaplaning kits offer excellent at home results.

I have had a professional dermaplaning treatment before where they dermaplaned my whole face, but instead of trying to tackle my whole face at home, I focused on the areas that had the most peach fuzz – they were, my sideburn area, cheeks, chin and under my neck. The instructions state that you must hold the tool at a 45 degree angle, pulling your skin taught with one hand and with the tool in the other, shaving in the same direction as your hair grows, which is usually downward. This part is very important. Shaving in the same direction your hair grows will prevent any ingrown hairs or for the hairs to grow back sharp or thick. The whole process only took a couple of minutes and after I had finished, I washed my face with cold water and used a gentle moisturiser with an SPF to help protect my freshly exfoliated skin.

My favourite part of having a dermaplaned face is how glowy it looks after you have removed all of the dead skin cells and how well your makeup stays on your face without getting caught in your peach fuzz. It really is such a simple and easy process to do at home and doesn’t take as long as you would think to complete your treatment. I usually wait two to three weeks in-between treatments and even though my hair grows back quickly, it doesn’t grow back thicker or blacker, so it isn’t noticeable regrowth.

Bondi Blades tools are biodegradable and eco-friendly – which is a double bonus for me as I am a big advocate for sustainable beauty. I would recommend swapping the tools out after about three to four uses – I found my tool to start to get blunt after three sessions using it, but I suppose it depends on how big the area is you are using the tool on – if you are just using it to touch up small areas, your tools will last a lot longer.

The only downfall I would say is that I still haven’t mastered getting through a full dermaplaning session without at least one small nick on my skin, especially over the jawline or on the neck. But you aren’t shaving too hard and because the tools are designed to move with the direction of your hair growth, the nicks aren’t deep at all and heal in a couple of days.

Overall, I would highly recommend this product for easy, at-home, salon-quality results. The kits are inexpensive and easy to use and the results are addictive!
