We Love to Fake It: Our Picks For Tan Fans

Skin damage from sun exposure starts from the very first minute you sit in the sun.

We all know about the risk of skin cancer from sun-bathing, but even if you're lucky and manage to avoid this, sun damage will still break down collagen and elastin in the skin and cause premature ageing.

Always wear a good sunscreen.

Apply it liberally half an hour before sun exposure, and reapply after swimming.

Self-tanning tips

Want an easy, low maintenance faux tan? Consider a gradual tanner.

These multi-tasking products moisturise and give a slight hint of colour which builds up over a few days to give a very natural tan. Simply apply every day after showering.

Gradual Tan Product picks:

Joico Skin Luxe Shimmering Gradual Self Tanner RRP $25, This shimmering self-tanning lotion gradually builds an even, natural-looking tan, without the sun.

St Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan for Body RRP $60.30 – Every Day Body, is a gentle hydrating, paraben-free body moisturiser with a touch of self-tan for natural healthy-looking radiance.

Dove Summer Glow Body Lotion RRP $7.09, The unique combination of active Dove moisturisers and a hint of self tanning agents will gradually build a light tan to leave your skin silky smooth.

Before applying any self-tan, gently exfoliate the body in the shower first to create a smooth canvas for your colour. A facecloth or gentle exfoliating gloves and some body wash will do the trick.

Go easy and don't over scrub your skin. If you have old, built up tan which is proving hard to scrub off, a soak in the bath followed by gentle exfoliation will help lift the colour.

Pre-Tan Preperation Product Picks

Pure Fiji Coconut Sugar Rub RRP $66.50, A natural two-in-one body polishing treatment, which gently buffs away dead skin cells and cleans pores at the same time.

Self-tanners come in a range of textures and applicators. Sprays are super easy, and a tinted spray will guide your application.

Lotions and Mousses will generally be more moisturising, just make sure you wash hands well after applying.

Self Tan Product picks:

L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Luminous Bronzer RRP$24.99 The formula is enriched with fast-action self-tanners, anti-oxidants and Vitamin E for a smooth, streak-free, even-looking golden skin tone.

Moisturising dry areas first will avoid colour "grabbing" and looking blotchy. Avoid streaking by working on one area at a time, and applying your tan in circular motions.

If you aren't confident, call in the experts. Professional spray tans give excellent results, and many spray tanning companies offer an in-home service.

Keeping skin in great condition will prolong your spray tan, so avoid long hot showers, pat skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing, and keep the skin hydrated with twice daily moisturising.

Gradual tanners are also fantastic for keeping spray tan colour looking fresh.

In a rush? Apply a cosmetic bronzing cream or spray that will shower off. These work like foundation for the legs and body.
