WE-AR‘s latest Spring/Summer collection is about to arrive in stores and this season it explores a soft and pretty colour palette. Designer Jyoti Morningstar has called the range ‘The Space in Between’ and it’s inspired by the Japanese concept of creative space. “This collection emerged from a conversation with the artist Kazu Nakagawa, who explained how we create ‘Ma’ in our work – which is Japanese for the something that occurs, or ‘just is’, between words in conversation, or notes in music,” says Morningstar. “‘The Space in Between’ is what is between objects, between layers of cloth, between bodies and between the moments of perceiving or experiencing any of this.”
Over the years the designer and eco-conscious entrepreneur has often gone for vibrant hues or lots of black but this season sees a much softer approach with sea pine an anchoring colour of the range, complemented by wild sage, emerald, sandshell, cloudburst (a muted grey) and lovestruck (a charming nude pink). These gentle tones create a calmness and capture the sense of space the designer feels in specific places such as the sandy seaside.
As always WE-AR’s garments are designed with ease of movement in mind and the jumpsuit and parachute dresses are the hero pieces in this collection. The emphasis on mixed volumes and feature sleeves create beautiful shapes while sweet playsuits and casual tops and pants create lots of easy to wear outfit options. Breathable linen, eco-lover’s tencel, fine supima and organic jersey make for soft on your skin fabrics that are a dream to wear in the warm weather.
This collection was created with the concept of a ‘shared wardrobe’ in mind with much of the men’s collection styled for a masculine edged minimalism for men and women alike. “The shapes arose out of the textiles and colours and seemed to almost create themselves as I inhabited each space presented by the colour palette,” adds Morningstar.
WE-AR’s The Space in Between Spring/Summer 2018 collection is available at stores and stockists throughout New Zealand and Bali as well as online from mid-August.
