Historically, tweed was seen as a Scottish workman's cloth until the 1840s. During that time a few groups of English aristocrats realised its potential as a great outerwear fabric for hunting, shooting and fishing trips, making its way into the the English aristocratic society. A finer and softer version of the tweed was later developed.

Harris Tweed is the world's leading high-quality tweed cloth. The Scottish manufacturers still create pure virgin woollen fabrics using the old hand spun technique by Crofters in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. In order to protect the fabric against imitation, a certification mark was created in 1909 with the definition, "only tweeds woven in the Outer Hebrides would be eligible". This has definitely made Harris Tweed a sought after artisan fabric by the leading luxury brands and designers.
