Tips from a makeup expert

Samala Robinson is one of New Zealand’s top make-up artists and Director of the Samala Robinson Makeup Academy. She previously spent 10 years working on some of the country’s most famous faces at TV3 where she headed up the make up department.

Samala’s role meant she was responsible for keeping the channel’s team of presenters at the forefront of beauty and presentation trends.

Mascara

I like to have a really thick, black mascara in my makeup kit to add extra volume and length to lashes – essential for sultry makeup.

Create a glossy stain

Apply a waxy lip balm as a base to your lips and then over the top apply your favourite lipstick without lip liner to create a barely there glossy stain. Great to add colour to your complexion with a no make-up look.

Blend

My favourite must have tool is the blending eye brush by Trucco. Perfect for getting your eye shadow to blend effortlessly through the crease and in the right position. I totally recommend it for anyone who has trouble applying eye makeup.

Latex sponges

Latex sponges would have to be one of my must haves because they are the best way to perfectly blend your foundation. A good tip is to apply your moisturizer with the sponge and then apply foundation. The sponge will absorb less product and your foundation will last longer in the bottle as well as on your skin.

And her secret weapon:

My secret weapon in my kit is the Compeed Cold Sore Patch. An innovative new product to heal and disguise a cold sore which lets you apply makeup directly over the top.
