There really is nothing worse than hearing the dreaded “you look tired.” In this day and age, with daily stresses and environmental aggressors, our skin tends to bear the brunt of it. As we age, our skin becomes looser we lose volume and elasticity, our body’s collagen production levels slow right down producing less and less often, elastin fibres wear out and our dermal layer thins. However, we can help curb the effort of those things by making sure our skin is plump and hydrated, which in turn can soften the appearance of premature skin ageing. Aside from looking after our skin on a daily basis, there are also treatments we can do to give our skin a little boost to accompany a healthy lifestyle.
We have put together some tips and tricks on how to plump the skin and improve hydration levels, which will help to improve the appearance of premature skin ageing and dehydrated skin, so you can look your best, even if you are not always feeling it.
Diet and lifestyle
The number one thing you can do to prevent premature skin ageing is to look after your body from the inside out on a daily basis. Drinking water will help to flush out any toxins in the body and keep your skin hydrated. Eating the right foods to fuel your body is also very important and specifically, eating good fatty acids, such as fish and other nutritious superfoods such as leafy greens, garlic, avocado and berries will help to boost collagen levels in the body. You can even go a step further by introducing supplements to your healthcare routines, such as collagen powders, fish oil or phytoceramides.
Massage your skin
The face has muscles, just like the body and it is common practice to exercise your body, but when was the last time you exercised your face? By doing regular face exercises or even massaging your skin, you are stimulating muscle tissue that might otherwise not get used. This can improve volume and elasticity whilst also combating atrophy. Get into the habit of including this practice in your skincare regime. You can even invest in a facial massage tool that you can use whilst applying skincare.
Skincare
Many skincare ingredients can help boost our collagen levels. Hyaluronic acid is one of the best skin care products and is a must for helping to boost skin’s hydration levels and is an important compound for collagen in the skin. The best skincare products to keep your skin looking young contain AHAs and Retinol, as they encourage cellular turnover.
Microneedling treatments
Microneedling treatments are fantastic for skin rejuvenation, also helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and expression lines. Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT for short is performed with a micro-needling pen. This works by using small needles to puncture the skin’s barrier creating tiny micro-wounds, this then triggers a healing response within the body.
In the process of regenerating itself, the skin’s collagen production levels are boosted and new collagen growth is stimulated in the process. CIT encourages skin rejuvenation, volumises and plumps the complexion, strengthens the skin’s barrier and boosts elasticity, increasing production levels of elastin and collagen. As the new collagen is produced and dispersed, wrinkles appear less deep, fine lines are reduced, pitted skin fills in, texture irregularities become less noticeable, acne scars fade and stretch marks become smoother.
You can even invest in a dermaroller for at-home use, this will help boost the effects from your professional treatments. Look for a professionally made company or brand that uses titanium needles, or your treatment provider may even stock one. Ideally, look for a length of 0.3mm as this is the most optimal length for affecting and targeting fine lines. When micro-needling at home, it helps to pull the skin or wrinkle taught so that the needles can get into fold caused by the wrinkle. Make sure you always sanitise your roller thoroughly after dermarolling at home.
Plasma rejuvenation
This is a growing trend within the anti-ageing and skin rejuvenation field and is increasingly popular as a non-surgical treatment. A Plasma Pen utilises a small electric charge (plasma flash) to deliver energy to the superficial skin cells, changing the targeted treatment area from a solid to a gas (without damaging a surrounding tissue). This process is called sublimination and creates a wound healing response within the skin, causing the collagen fibres to contract and stimulating fibroblast cells to produce new collagen, renewing the dermal tissue and repairing the skin. A crust will develop following treatment but will dissipate within a week and new collagen continues to generate for a 4-6 week period following the treatment, resulting in smoother, tighter looking skin.
IPL Photo Rejuvenation
IPL stands for Intensed Pulsed Light and works by applying rapid pulses of light at varying lengths to the treatment area. A treatment with an IPL machine will provide strong pulses of filtered light that work to improve skin texture and tone as well as stimulating the fibroblast cells within the skin so as to encourage collagen and elastin production. This also works to plump, firm and hydrate the skin as well as improving overall skin tone and texture by regenerating the skin. This results in a smoother, younger, fresher complexion with no downtime and only slight redness afterwards, with long-lasting results.
