Let’s talk about switching to biodegradable or reusable menstrual product alternatives. Image supplied.
It may no longer by Plastic Free July but let’s have a conversation about periods and how, as women, we need to do our part in healing the environment by changing our mindsets and switching to biodegradable or reusable menstrual product alternatives.
Menstrual products such as pads and tampons absorb our bodily fluids and because of that reason, they cannot be recycled. Did you know that traditional non-organic pads and tampons are made from 90% plastic? And that plastic is going inside of our bodies. Some conventional tampons even contain Dioxin, a known carcinogen which is said to cause cancer, as well as potential reproductive damage. Did you also know that the average woman uses between 9,000 – 11,000 sanitary products in her menstrual lifetime? Those products then end up in landfill and waterways, taking roughly 450 years to decompose. Let that sink in.
If these stats make you feel uncomfortable, then good. Because we need to be the change and we need to start making these changes now. To help do your part in reducing menstrual product waste we have provided you with some biodegradable and reusable options for your monthly visit from Aunt Flo, so you can not only make a healthier choice for your body but a healthier choice for our planet. Because we only have one.
Menstrual cups
A menstrual cup is a plastic reusable cup that sits inside your vagina. If inserted correctly, the cup should be able to remain inside you for 6 – 12 hours, depending on your flow. Once full, you can empty the cup, clean it and reinsert. It is safe to use overnight and can be kept if maintained correctly, for up to 10 years. Imagine how much money you will save, not to mention how many pads and tampons you will save from damaging the environment. It may be daunting to insert the cup at first, but there are plenty of online guides and forums to help get the technique right. Once inserted correctly you shouldn’t be able to feel it at all.
Period underwear
Made from layers of absorbent and microbial fabrics that absorb moisture and odours, period underwear are a great option for those who don’t like anything that can be invasive or uncomfortable. Simply wear, wash and repeat. Another amazing environmentally friendly option that lasts.
Biodegradable pads
Biodegradable pads are just like generic plastic pads but are instead made from materials like organic bamboo, making them not only healthier for you to use, without pesticides, perfumes and plastics, but are also much, much better for the environment as they will biodegrade much faster than their plastic counterparts.
Reusable cotton pads
Reusable cotton pads are also a great option when making a more environmentally conscious purchase for your menstrual products. The cotton pads are absorbent, leak-proof, water-proof and you can use them for up to 3 years. Saving you a tonne of money and saving the planet a tonne of plastic waste.
