Surviving Summer: Skin Essentials

During the warmer months we spend more time outdoors whether it be socialising, exercising or relaxing at beach.

As we determine outfits for each of these activities we also need to consider which skin products we need to protect our skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

Sun protection should no longer be a “just at the beach” ritual, it needs to be an everyday essential, just like brushing our hair or teeth.

In a two part series Fashionz explores which products are best for each occasion and provides tips for every day in between.

This week we look at socialising and exercising.

Socialising

Barbeques or a lunch alfresco style at a favourite restaurant seems to be an ever-popular tradition in Kiwi culture.

So often the hours fly by and it’s not till your shoulders are tender and pink that you realise just how long you’ve been in the sun.

Remember our bodies are pretty well covered up throughout the winter so sudden exposure to sun makes newly exposed these areas, hot spots for sunburn.

Switch to a daily body moisturiser with an SPF and always carry something a little stronger in your bag for some extra coverage (especially for shoulders, chest and feet) when needed.

Sun protection in a spray is the perfect solution for touch ups throughout the day. It’s not only light on your skin but easy to apply when you’re out and about.

Use a facial moisturiser which contains sunblock. These days there are so many to choose from, solutions a bound for every budget and skin type plus they are made to be worn under normal make-up.

When wearing a new dress or when you need to look your best we recommend products which are designed to be lightweight and absorbent.

Our choices are:

Exercising

Summer is the time to get out and about, walking the dog or going for a jog.

Out go the daggy trackies and in come the shorts and tee or something sleek and spandex.

Remember with the warmer temperature, extra activity will make you perspire so you need to find a sun protection product that won’t sweat off.

Make sure you cover yourself from head to toe, including those tricky little areas such as behind your knees and thighs and the back of your neck.

Don’t forget a hat to shield your face either; brown spots and premature aging are not your friends.
