Rose Keys is the designer behind sophisticated womenswear brand LANIA The Label which is available in boutiques throughout New Zealand and Australia. A veteran NZ designer, Rose has worked with Longbeach Apparel to create new brand LANIA, which was formerly known as FRAY the Label. She brings her signature design values to LANIA, delivering seasonal collections that have an effortless elegance and are full of refined, comfortable pieces.
We caught up with Rose to find out more about her brand, what inspires her and what you would never catch her wearing!
Tell us about your latest collection?
L A N I A the label Spring 19 will be our next drop in August to our growing retail stores… the range is soft in colour and natural in fabrications – a mix and match collection, each item has a little trim or detail to catch the eye of the LANIA woman, sophisticated and understated.
What made you become a designer?
My love of textures and fabrics. In my early career I worked at Keith Matheson, and all I dreamt of was the beautiful fabrics and this is still a driving factor in what I create today.
What inspires you?
Travelling to interpret style, both on the street and in stores is a great inspiration. From a young age my parents gave me the opportunity to study overseas and I have never stopped travelling.
The environment and a change in the weather is an influence which brings the feeling of wanting something new. I start to think about what I need and want, which transitions into designing for the new season LANIA customer. Fabrics give me the greatest inspiration to start a collection.

Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
I love to feel feminine with a masculine touch – either a leather jacket over a dress or a menswear jacket with a beautiful silk top, rarely would I match an outfit.
What is your all-time favourite purchase?
There have been many, but one that I am very thankful to have purchased – Leather and pony fur jacket bought in Melbourne many years ago from a brilliant designer Claude Maus.
What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
Leather jacket.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
Many, but I do not always obey; I love black, sharp and sophisticated with a pop of colour is my go-to. I’m a firm believer If it feels right it is right, a lot of the time less is more when it comes to fashion.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
The thrill of working in and industry that is creative and providing women with clothing that is an investment in their wellbeing and lives.
I am grateful every day to be doing something I love.
