Creative director Matthew Webb founded menswear label MAJW in 2019 with the aim of creating carefully considered, elevated streetwear that has a sustainable focus. He recently released the second drop of his debut collection which features contemporary masculine designs that have a classic feel. Recognising that he could help support local production and create a sustainable business model Matthew produces MAJW locally in Auckland and Hamilton using ethically sourced natural fibres such as organic cotton, linen and hemp.

We caught up with Matthew to find out more about his brand, what inspires him and what you would never catch him wearing!

Tell us about your latest collection?
As this is my first collection, my aim is to help redesign fashion’s current model through carefully considered, elevated streetwear. After recognising a gap for innovative, contemporary and conscious design, I wanted to rediscover fashion’s past qualities and bring back classic and chic masculine attire and unite it with a modern aesthetic.

What made you become a designer?
I’ve always been inspired by fashion and design and growing up near the bottom of New Zealand also gave me a huge appreciation for our landscapes and the environment we live in. It was important to me that I create a brand that not only allows me to showcase my designs but do it in a conscious way that exemplifies quality and care through a circular model.

What inspires you?
From a creative standpoint, I’ve always been a fan of James Dean for his style and charisma. From a business point of view, I’ve always admired Bill Gates for his ability to think with an infinite mindset that cares for the longevity of his work and the people around him.

Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
I’ve always admired Scandinavian brands for their ability to transform classic designs into something that’s raw and modern and has its own personality. Seeing this gives me the inspiration to play around with older, timeless designs and evolve them into something that is unique and contemporary.

What is your all-time favourite purchase?
My Common Project shoes in low grey and my Henrick Vibskov pants in khaki green.

What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
A pair of timeless sneakers or boots.

Do you have a style rule you always obey?
I generally go for neutral colours but I always like one of my outfit pieces to be edgy and a bit different.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Starting my own brand. There have been a lot of sleepless nights but creating something that I’m extremely passionate about and bringing it to life has given me a huge amount of confidence in my own ability.

What can’t you live without?
My partner, India, she’s epic.
