Jes Chang, designer of Children of Promise.
Jes Chang created her label Children of Promise with a vision to fuse the creativity of fashion with philanthropic purpose. She produces small capsule collections that are ethically designed and made in Wellington with a simple but chic aesthetic. Her label donates ten percent of its profits to charities that support young people and Jes aims to be a change for the better in an industry that doesn’t always do as much good as it could.
We caught up with Jes to find out more about her brand, what inspires her and what you would never catch her wearing!
Tell us about your latest collection?
The latest collection is actually also our first release – capsule no.1 features 5 key pieces for the wardrobe. Gracing in silk, the pieces embrace transeasonality and each one is crafted with detail and comfort in mind.
What made you become a designer?
Fashion is communication. As a designer, you get to communicate your voice to the world. I wanted to explore the concept of creating style that goes beyond one’s appearance, but fashion that speaks attentiveness to our surroundings – hence the birth of Children of Promise, the amalgamation of fashion and philanthropy.
What inspires you?
I am particularly fascinated by colours, textures, architecture, emotions and people.

I like to dress simple, but well. I’m an advocate of quality and I believe in fine details. Tactility plays a huge part in how I dress. I am very selective about what I put on my body – it’s important for me to wear honest and natural fabrics as they are biodegradable and enable my skin to breathe. Children of Promise is very much a reflection of my pursuit in fashion.
My Juki industrial sewing machine – that baby helps to stimulate my creativity!
What wardrobe item should every woman invest in?
A silk shirt – the kind that transforms you in to a ethereal Parisian goddess.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
‘Buy less, choose well, make it last.’ – candid words from the one and only, Vivienne Westwood.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Connecting with people who also believe in the COP dream.
What can’t you live without?
People – my family and my core group of friends are the ones keeping me sane, reminding me the importance of rest as often I forget I’m not superwoman. Oh, and coffee must always be within reach.
Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing…
Anything viscose, my skin doesn’t appreciate its sandpaper-like effect.
