Jewellery designer Jane Eppstein has been handcrafting jewellery for over a decade from her Wellington-based studio. The designer traded corporate life for a more creative one in the UK before moving to New Zealand in 2006 with her husband. Jane is known for her modern style with elegant pieces that are chic and appealing.
We caught up with Jane to find out more about her brand, what inspires her and what you would never catch her wearing!
Tell us about your latest collection?
My latest collection is called LOOP. It is a classic modern collection of smooth and hammered circular shaped pieces in silver, yellow gold and red gold. It launches in July.
What made you become a designer?
My career started out along a completely different path, but I’ve always loved drawing and making small detailed things. While working in London I was exposed to the art, fashion and design worlds which led me to leave my position in an Investment Bank and study Jewellery and Silversmithing at London Metropolitan University. It was immediately clear I’d discovered my destiny. From there I worked for two London based jewellery designers; both incredibly inspiring experiences. I then moved to New Zealand with my (now) husband and set up my own jewellery label, Jane Eppstein Jewellery.
What inspires you?
My collections to date have been influenced by ancient symbols and stories, architecture, the Wild and simple geometric shapes. Lately I’m finding myself particularly inspired by music, dance and gymnastics! I wonder where this will lead design-wise…

Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs.
Generally I’m drawn to fairly simply silhouettes made from quality fabrics yet which have interesting details such as an unusual neckline or cuff. When it comes to jewellery, I’m about adding polished interest to everyday style with a little edge.
I definitely have to feel comfortable to feel stylish.
What is your all-time favourite purchase?
A pair of quality masculine black leather ankle boots which I bought around four years ago. I’ve worn them with everything from jeans to silk dresses.
What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
A jumpsuit. They look amazing dressed up or down.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
No rules.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been several fun times along the way: designing a range for Deborah Sweeney’s ‘Field Day’ collection a few years ago, working with young talented people on my lookbook shoots and whenever new customers say ‘I really love this jewellery!’
What can’t you live without?
Rings.
Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing…
Generic outdoor ‘adventure’ clothing. You don’t need to wear ugly clothes to have an adventure.
