Jakob Carter launched his eponymous fashion label last month at a glamorous event at Rydges Auckland which saw his debut collection take to the runway. The newly minted designer used his first show as an opportunity to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand and had model Danielle Hayes speak on the night of her experiences and the importance of the cause. Stylist Sammy Salsa helped Jakob create runway worth looks for men and women that showcased the modern appeal of the range. Jakob’s first collection is designed and made here in New Zealand with his debut range available exclusively online.
We caught up with Jakob to find out more about his brand, what inspires him and what you would never catch him wearing!
Tell us about your latest collection?
My first collection culminates my love for travel and colours into a cohesively vibrant collection. When designing this collection one of the most important aspects for me to show within my collection is strength. Giving our customers a piece they can feel bold and empowered in while being able to enjoy it for years to come.
What made you become a designer?
I remember being quite a young age when I first became interested in fashion and design. Sitting down in front of a blank piece of paper and then turning that into my own vision or design has always felt very freeing for me. Being able to express your true self through art, design and most of all fashion. The beauty of being a fashion designer is that you then get to make your idea come to life which can then be shared and enjoyed by people for years to come. One of the best parts about being a designer is choosing the fabrics for the coming collection. A fabric can inspire a single design or entire collection.
What inspires you?
I have always been inspired by a number of things that surround my everyday life. My love of travelling and learning about new cultures, different walks of life and most of all the colours surrounding me have a large impact on the pieces I’ve designed. I’m always watching and searching for new and different ways of doing things, I like to break rules and shake things up a bit.

Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
My personal style is quite chill and laid back but still classy. I tend to wear a lot of unique and colourful pieces in my everyday life sometimes paired with a simple black short or pant to give that pop of colour. I think it’s important to feel like yourself and I do this through expression in the clothing I wear as well as the collections I design.
What is your all-time favourite purchase?
One of my all-time favourite pieces would probably have to be my oversized vintage light blue denim jacket. I’ve always felt like a bit of an old soul and think everyone needs a vintage piece or two in their wardrobe to pull out from time to time!
What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
I would recommend women to invest in a ‘little black dress’. Something simple yet beautiful that can be dressed up and down depending on the occasion. Karl Lagerfeld once said “one is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a little black dress”.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
When it comes to designing I try to stick with having no rules or guide. One of my valuable lessons was learning there’s more than one way to create something so why limit your designs or style with rules. Challenge yourself with new ideas then slowly put the pieces together to make it a reality.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Definitely would have to be working with the iconic Sammy Salsa and Danielle Hayes. I love how their work empowers others to be themselves. They’ve both taught me so many valuable lessons within the launch of my first Spring/Summer season and I hope one day I can pass on what I’ve learned to others in the same way they helped me.
What can’t you live without?
My puppy Kobe. He’s a cocker spaniel and loves cuddling. Would be lost without him!
