Designer Bron Eichenbaum launched her contemporary womenswear label herriot in early 2017 and produces limited runs of her playful pieces in small drops throughout the year. Her garments are all designed and made locally utilising craftspeople to create exclusive pieces that are made to last. Last month, Bron’s label gained international attention when Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wore satin pants by herriot in her portrait for Vogue.
We caught up with Bron to find out more about her brand, what inspires her and what you would never catch her wearing!
Tell us about your latest collection?
The latest capsule is all about freedom. The textiles can be worn co-ordinated or rebound off each other for an eccentric flair.
Inspirations include the Roma people – I love the way they cross genders with oversized garments (because it’s not actually the right size for them to begin with) and recycle their clothing, repairing it when it can be. A modern reference is contemporary Jane Birkin, she wears slouchy, comfortable clothing with a playful androgyny.
What made you become a designer?
An itch that just had to be scratched. And my friends constantly pushing me and believing in me to do this. They promised to buy my clothes and I’m going to hold them to it.
What inspires you?
The street mostly. I could sit for hours watching people and the way they put themselves together. There’s no right or wrong. Style is in the eye of the observer.

Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
I’m into comfort, it’s a strong influence in my designs. I’ve also always been a bit of a tomboy so I often draw ideas from men’s collections, twisting them to work for women.
What is your all-time favourite purchase?
Oh my, that’s a cruel question. I have so many and there are different favourites at varying times depending on the occasion or mood. I do love a good slogan tee though.
What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
A well-cut black jacket. They work with everything and instantly make a statement of serious intent.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
Comfort, it’s not a rule as much as a habit. You simply can’t look good if you’re not comfortable in what you are wearing.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
When Cath at Prefab (Wellington café) sent me a snap of the most gorgeous young woman wearing a herriot sweatshirt. My first ‘complete stranger purchasing my clothing’ moment!
What can’t you live without?
My Rains backpack as I ride an e-bike every day.
Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing…
Red and black together in the same outfit. It stems from the trauma of growing up in Christchurch in the height of Ranfurly Shield fever.
