Designer Beau Takapu came to the nation’s attention as a contestant on the first season of Project Runway New Zealand in 2018. Beau’s flair for gowns and elegant dressing was evident on the show and PRNZ was the catalyst for him launching his own eponymous brand which he debuted last month. Held at the Fale Pasifika in Auckland, Beau presented his first solo collection in a beautiful show that reflected his refined style and Tongan heritage. The collection was inspired by HRH Princess Royal of Tonga, who was also in attendance for the show.
We caught up with Beau to find out more about his brand, what inspires him and what you would never catch him wearing!
Tell us about your latest collection?
My Ready to Wear collection is inspire by HRH Princess Royal of Tonga’s sophistication and elegance. Combining the rich and vibrant hues of the South Pacific.
What made you become a designer?
Without knowing from a young age I’ve always been creative. It wasn’t until I got older that I realised what exactly this talent was all about. I’ve had the opportunity to refine my aesthetic through my life experiences, travel and individuals across the world. Therefore, my inner expression flows naturally to the forefront.
What inspires you?
Life inspires me, people and their kindness inspires me. Culture, food, music even the sky and the sea inspires me. But what really inspires is LOVE, we can’t live without it even if we tried. One way or another it will find us at unexpected moments. Through my garments is my way of showing my love for you.
Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
My personal style is not the most interesting as it’s quite simple. My weekday look would mostly consist of jeans paired with a long sleeve T or white shirt. Weekends, definitely pair of shorts, long sleeve t and a jumper around my shoulders. One way or another it may influence a little bit but not really.
What is your all-time favourite purchase?
To be honest, I don’t think I have a favourite as I love everything I buy or else I wouldn’t have it in my wardrobe. I do choose carefully. Colour, silhouette and brand etc. as everything goes into consideration.
What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
Every piece you buy is an investment. Absolutely, definitely have your essentials like that pair of jeans, the little black dress and that winter coat. As long as the wearer understands balance and colour palettes that suits them whatever you pull out of your wardrobe wouldn’t matter.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
When dressing for the occasion always think about time of day, what season we are in and location. But most important style rule, IF IT DOESN’T FIT, GIVE IT AWAY. Sharing is caring!
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I’ll be the big four zero at the end of this year and I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time. Launching my own clothing brand, big or small has meant everything to me. Dreams do to come true with hard work, determination and perseverance.
What can’t you live without?
Besides my handbags, shoes and jewels, my husband Anton, family and friends.
Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing…
That jumper I wear around my shoulders.
