Anna White founded her eponymous luxury leather goods brand in late 2016 after seeing a gap in the New Zealand market for the sophisticated yet classic style she was after. Her debut collection has been noticed for all the right reasons with Anna’s chic brand selected as one of just ten designers to show at The Suites at this year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. It’s still very early days but Anna’s focus on high quality materials and impeccable finishing combined with her sharp eye for stylish design means we’re sure you’ll be seeing Anna White bags on the arms of many well-heeled women in future.
We caught up with Anna to find out more about her brand, what inspires her and what she can’t live without.
Tell us about your latest collection?
It is inspired by the rugged coastlines of New Zealand. You can always find amazing things in nature. My favourite colours always come from the earth – the latest palette includes shades of taupe, stone, noir, deep sea and a beautiful mustard yellow called sun.
What made you become a designer?
I’ve always appreciated design that has a natural sense of proportion to it. I began sketching bags many years ago when I was inspired by the women that I met and places that I visited on my travels. It wasn’t until later on that I decided to pursue it as a career.

What inspires you?
When I’m designing a bag, I see it as an object, more as a sculpture than an accessory. I am constantly inspired by architecture and modernist art.
Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
While I admire whimsical fashion, at the end of the day, I just want clothing that I can really wear. It needs to be effortless, beautifully constructed and something that I will love for years to come. This has definitely translated over into my designs. I like the idea of buying once and buying well. Nothing goes out of fashion quite as quickly as fashion!
What is your all-time favourite purchase?
It wasn’t something I purchased but was given by my parents for my 21st birthday; a beloved piece of abstract art by Samuel Harrison – an incredible artist from Christchurch, New Zealand. It is a piece that I always enjoy gazing at and will treasure for years to come.

What wardrobe item should every woman invest in?
An expertly crafted leather handbag will always stand the test of time and pull a look together.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
Rules are made to be broken when it comes to style but those who have a sense of ease in the way that they dress always seem to shine.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being asked to present my latest collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia. It is still early on in my career as a designer so I look forward to seeing what the future holds.
What can’t you live without?
My amazing family and friends, being in nature, incredible food, wine, the ocean… the list could go on!
