Designer Aishwarya Angadi. Image supplied.
Aishwarya Angadi recently finished her fashion design degree at Auckland’s AUT and presented her DIGITAL GEOMETRY collection on the AUT ROOKIE runway in late 2018. We were fascinated by her colourful knits that were cleverly styled into eye-catching streetwear looks. Aishwarya is currently enjoying an international sabbatical and has set up Angadi Studio to showcase her knitwear online. We’re excited to see what this talented young designer does with her emerging label.
We caught up with Aishwarya to find out more about her collection, what inspires her and what you would never catch her wearing.
Tell us about your latest collection?
My latest collection is called DIGITAL GEOMETRY and it is a contemporary urban women’s wear collection based on psychedelic geometry and patterns. It integrates flamboyant colours, optical illusions and fractals in the form of knitwear. The collection experiments with proportions and volume to deliver a flavour of streetwear aesthetics.
Colour is a key factor in my collection and is my response to the sea of black and muted tones that I was constantly surrounded by in New Zealand. I was born in India which is the epitome of colour where both men and women dress in vibrant colours and patterns on a daily basis. This was the initial inspiration that drove me to develop this collection.
What made you become a designer?
Ever since I was kid I loved sewing and creating things with my hands. All through my primary years I took sewing classes and fell in love with the art of making garments so it was a natural course to study fashion and pursue a career as a designer.
What inspires you?
Inspiration comes from everywhere for me. It’s usually in the form on an abstract concept such as displacement which I then continue on to create mood/colour board and fabric story around which become the overarching pillars that inform my designs.

Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
My personal style is constantly changing and always adapting to the environment I’m in. I go through stages where sometimes I’ll be wearing classic tailored outfits to others where I’ll be dressed head to toe in streetwear but the one thing that remains constant is colour. If I can avoid wearing black then I will do so.
What is your all-time favourite purchase?
I have too many to pick from haha, but my recent purchase is a pair of white Nike air forces. They’re super comfortable and go well with all my outfits.
What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
A good pair of boots. They have the ability to polish any outfit you wear.
Do you have a style rule you always obey?
Hmmm, I don’t believe there are any rules in styling. Just be comfortable!

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being selected to showcase my collection as part of the AUT Rookie Show. It was an incredible experience seeing my collection on the runway.
What can’t you live without?
A nice cup of ginger chai, it truly brings peace to my soul.
Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing…
Crocs.
