The latest collection from Starving Artists Fund arrived online today with the new range called Burn Out, a product of the year that was. For designer Natasha Ovely, the past year has been one of observation and reflection, deciding whether her own label, and fashion itself, was still relevant in the changed world we now find ourselves in.
“In the face of this pandemic, being part of the fashion industry felt perfunctory,” says Natasha. “This, along with the realities of financial hardships, led me to question my relationship with it. Burn Out marks a decision made, after much deliberation, to carry on. To respect that it is my mode of contribution, in the capacity available to me.”
After spending a lot more time than usual at home, Natasha referenced the colour scheme and clash of prints from her own living room for this new collection. It’s a clever way to reflect how a personal space turned into a forced sanctuary during multiple lockdowns. The celebration of the little triumphs of freedom come through in joyful sculptural shapes where the designer’s fine arts background comes into play even more.
The eye-catching collection features a range of unique garments with everything from a full-length sheer dress to statement print pants and wonderfully draped tops. It’s a suitably artistic expression of a year full of chaos and perfect for those who want to dress to represent their individuality.
