Sprint into It-Girl status – The PUMA Speedcat makes a fast return to fashion

Looking for a sneaker that isn’t a Samba? Check out these Emrata-approved kicks that are on their way to becoming the next It-Girl sneaker.

PUMA is racing towards the podium with the 2024 re-release of the iconic OG Speedcat. Originally designed for the world’s fastest sport, the PUMA Speedcat has built a legendary reputation in the world of F1. Now, PUMA is bringing back the shoe that has been worn by Grand Prix champions.

For its initial release, the low-top Speedcat makes a comeback with lush suede finishes in black and red, paying homage to legendary F1 racing teams. Drawing inspiration from the racewear of the early 2000s, this reissue includes an embroidered cat detail on the toe and gold logo accents on the tongue and above the Formstrip.

Originally created in 1999, the PUMA Speedcat was modelled after the fireproof racing footwear worn by Grand Prix drivers throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. With its sleek, racing-inspired lines and aerodynamic design, the Speedcat quickly made a name for itself off the track, becoming a fashion and sneaker culture icon. Its low-profile silhouette gained popularity in fashion capitals from London to Berlin to Seoul, even leading to variations like the PUMA Drift Cat and Race Cat. The original Speedcat remains PUMA’s best-selling shoe to date.

Love her or hate her, there’s no denying Emrata’s impact on fashion trends. She’s been spotted striding through Manhattan, effortlessly rocking her Speedcats and setting style standards along the way.

For the 2024 Speedcat launch, PUMA has partnered with NAKED Copenhagen, a renowned Copenhagen-based retailer celebrated for its global female perspective. Together, they’re championing the Speedcat through a woman-led campaign that celebrates pioneering spirits both on and off the track. Just as every driver battles for pole position, the campaign highlights what it takes to be a female leader.

The muse and face of the campaign is stylist and creator Sierra Rena, who embodies fearless self-expression, inspired by trailblazers before her and determined to positively influence future generations. Paying tribute to the Speedcat’s legacy, the campaign presents the silhouette as a symbol of empowerment and innovation.

Designer Karen Walker, one of only two New Zealand stockists exclusively offering the Speedcat in her Playpark by Karen Walker stores, says: “The Speedcat is a shoe like no other—completely authentic and in its own lane. We’re proud to bring something distinctively different to our discerning customers.”

The Speedcat pis available in red and black colourways, stocked online through puma.com, and in store via Karen Walker and Subtype in unisex sizing for an RRP of $200.00 NZD.

Additional colourways of the PUMA Speedcat are set to arrive later this year.
