Specsavers have recently partnered with The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ to release two Limited Edition frames that employ the distinctive style of Samoan-New Zealand artist, Fatu Feu’u. Not only do cool tones and textured strokes make for stand-out frames, but a portion of profits are directed towards ending avoidable blindness in the Pacific.
Since partnering in 2012, Specsavers has raised almost $500,000 for The Foundation, says Specsavers NZ Country Director, Brendan Thompson. As part of The Foundation’s Gift of Sight fundraising initiative, $25 will be donated from the sale of each Limited Edition frame.
“It costs just $25 for a short 20-minute operation to restore someone’s sight and millions of people around the world are blind simply because they don’t have access to eye care services,” says The Foundation’s Engagement Director, Margi Mellsop. “Four out of five people [in the Pacific] who are blind don’t need to be.”
This vision in mind, a collaboration with the “Father of contemporary Pacific art” was the natural choice. Fatu’s ‘Palauli’ is translated onto the glasses, creating a modernist-inspired, contemporary design that looks to nature. The artwork forms a part of his 2016 Rainforest Series about conservation of the Savai’i rainforest. Given Fatu’s background in textile designs, the print brings intricate detail to an otherwise sleek set of frames.
The Limited Edition range is available in optical or prescription sunglasses styles and can be found online and in-store nationwide.
