Navigating the heat during summer can be a tricky business, especially when it comes to your beauty routine. Melting makeup and frizzy hair are hard to avoid for the most part – but not totally inevitable. So we have put together six beauty and hair tips to help in your fight against humidity this summer, so your morning hair and makeup routine will not totally be in vain and you can enjoy the summer sun, looking like the queen you are.

Switch up your skincare routine
It is important to switch up your skincare routine as the seasons change and so too, do the needs of your skin. During summer it is important to know what ingredients to avoid and what ingredients will nourish your skin in the heat. Active ingredients such as Retinol and Beta Hydroxy will increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so they are best used at night and never during the day. Ingredients like Niacinamide otherwise known as Vitamin B3 is a great skincare enhancer – it can help to block UV rays, so will often be found in SPF products. It will also improve the skins barrier function and plump the skin. Hyaluronic Acid is your skin’s best friend as it boosts moisture levels in the skin as a result of its water retention properties, perfect for that parched skin from the summer sun.

Use a primer
If you find your makeup slipping off your face as soon as you step outside, you might want to opt for a primer to use under your makeup to hold your look in place. If oily skin is your problem, a mattifying primer can help to reduce the appearance of pores, when they typically appear bigger and more open in summer. The right choice of foundation is also vital for that non-slip hold. Chances are, if your foundation is slipping then you’ve either applied too much or you’re using the wrong foundation. Try opting for a long-wearing foundation – but don’t cake it on, use it sparingly and just dab a little extra on the areas that need more coverage. Less is more in summer.

Use a powder
To set your makeup in place try using a pressed or loose powder, but the key is not the type of power, but rather, how you use it. Only dab a little on the areas that sweat the most – usually the T zone and use a powder brush to apply. If you find you’ve overdone it and your face looks too powdery, use a facial mist to add a bit more hydration back into your skin.

Switch your conditioner for a mask
When it comes to preventing humidity from messing with your hair this summer, making changes like switching to a hair mask instead of using conditioner is going to help. Using an overnight mask will add that extra hydration into your hair and sealing the ends better, to help prevent frizz.

Try a braid
Put away those straighteners and opt for a braid instead. Braiding your hair at night and leaving until the morning will help to achieve a lived-in beachy wave look and help to keep your hair in place, sans frizz. Try spritzing your hair with a sea-salt spray after removing the braids in the morning for that ultimate beachy look.

Use a leave-in frizz defence cream
Our final tip for fighting that summer humidity is to use a leave-in frizz defence cream after washing and towel drying your hair. If you have straight hair then brush the cream through your hair and if its wavy or curly use the cream to scrunch your hair and leave to air dry for natural, frizz-free body.
