The new Yu Mei collection looks at the ocean for its inspiration
Reflections of the ocean flow through New Zealand designer Jessie Wong’s newest Yu Mei collection.
At the heart of A New Day Breaks AW23 are powerful ocean blues, tempered with grounding seaweed suedes and pumice hues. The vibrant blues are undoubtedly the star power of the season.
The luxury leather range is beautifully designed to meet the demands and complexities of modern life. With a focus on design-conscious bags made from premium materials such as buttery soft New Zealand-farmed deer nappa (prized for its suppleness and strength), this leather is a byproduct of the venison industry that would otherwise be wasted.
With strong values around environment and community, Jessie and Yu Mei are donating 10% of sales from the Day Blue colourway across March to the Hawke’s Bay Foundation, contributing towards helping the recent devastation the Hawke’s Bay region experienced due to Cyclone Gabrielle.
Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Jessie Wong founded Yu Mei in 2015 when she couldn’t find a design-conscious bag that fitted everything she needed for a day. Seven years later, Yu Mei now has more than 37 stockists, including internationally renowned fashion destinations Farfetch, Bergdorf Goodman, and David Jones.
The minimal silhouettes of Autumn/Winter 23 speak to Yu Mei’s philosophy of timeless design. Each bag is designed for, and named after, a friend who had needs that weren’t previously being met.
The Yu Mei A New Day Breaks collection is available online and from Yu Mei Lounges and selected stockists worldwide.
