Looks from Ovna Ovich’s new ‘Once Was’ collection for SS 17/18. Images supplied.
Ovna Ovich has always had a focus on sustainability and ethically-made fashion and it’s something that designer Marina Davis has kept at the core of her business since launching it in 2013. Her commitment to environmentally aware work comes through in Ovna Ovich’s chapter eight, SS 17/18 collection called ‘Once Was’ which celebrates the garden-to-garment journey of the plant-based fibres used exclusively for each piece.
That focus on natural fabrics sees the designer utilise the likes of linen which is derived from flax and a perfectly light breathable fabric for summer. Linen is also grown with little or no chemical fertilizer, which means that all parts of the plant can be used after harvesting to create multiple byproducts, so nothing is wasted. Davis also used silk for the range which is a natural, biodegradable textile that’s suppleness makes it a dream to wear. Ultrafine tencel is a clever product made from cellulose from sustainably harvested wood pulp which makes for a surprisingly light fabric that is a good environmental choice. The collection includes minimal use of cotton which is certified organic by Global Organic Testing Standards, having been grown free from toxic herbicides and pesticides that harm both the environment and the hands involved with production.
The garments themselves feature Ovna Ovich’s signature clean silhouettes in relaxed shapes. Each piece is beautifully tailored to ensure comfort and to provide a base from which the fabrics take centre stage. The colour palette is suitably pared-back and reflects the natural inspiration in hues of charcoal and olive green with classic black and white. Diaphanous billowing shirts and casually cut drawstring pants make for summer ready options while charming sundresses with in slip dress styles and soft summer suiting make for charming weekend and workwear looks. This thoughtful collection is sure to inspire more fans to embrace buying locally made clothing that is designed to last.
