Designer Sera Lilly recently launched a new plus size clothing label called Friday Flamingo which offers more colourful, stylish options for curvy figures. She created the brand as she saw a gap in the market for her fashion forward take on plus size clothing at an affordable price.
The designer herself is curvy so understands her market and has a knack for designing pieces that women love wearing. “I know what parts of my body I feel insecure about and I design accordingly,” says Sera. “And I have always believed that the right fabric and a good cut, really can flatter any body shape. Unfortunately, many designers still believe that if you don’t fit their ideal body image, they don’t want you wearing their designs. Nor do they think you want to wear colour and prints, but I do.”
She has previously designed plus size clothing but the business model was based around seasonal drops which didn’t work so well with customer buying patterns. So this time she’s done things a bit differently. Friday Flamingo has eight new pieces available each month with only 150 pieces initially available across the size range in each style. The limited numbers mean customers are getting something a bit different at a price they can afford. Friday Flamingo have set up a pre-ordering system to avoid customers missing out too.
The initial launch range includes kimonos, pleated skirts, jackets, a maxi dress and a cold shoulder top. The mix of bright hues and playful prints is sure to be popular for summer with new styles coming soon.
