If you keep in touch with the world of beauty, you will have noticed the growing popularity of Mineral makeup. Creating makeup with the use of minerals has been around for decades and was originally considered 'alternative' in comparison to conventional makeup. Mineral makeup is pure and effective, providing a luminous coverage while being kind to your skin – so how does it work?
Mineral makeup is made up of all natural, finely ground minerals from the earth such as Mica, Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide. There are no chemicals, dyes, fragrances or preservatives used, which makes it extremely safe for sensitive or acne prone skin. Not all mineral makeup is the same and some products are more pure than others. A good way to check this is to read the list of ingredients and if the minerals are way down the bottom, you will know that it is not a pure mineral product.
One of the factors that makes mineral powder so effective in comparison to your average liquid foundation is its smooth, long lasting coverage. A good mineral powder (such as Jane Iredale's popular 'Purepressed base') is comprised of blended minerals and pigments that are pulverised to form microscopic flat crystals. These crystals overlap each other on the skin to form a filter that allows the skin to breathe, protecting it from pollutants without clogging pores.
The big plus with mineral powder is that it is easy to use, simply apply with a soft fluffy brush and buff it on to your skin using a circular motion. The staying power of minerals is so great, that you will rarely need to touch up your makeup during the day and because minerals are water resistant, they won't crease or smear.
The latest mineral offering from Smashbox is their 'Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder' – this is a hydrating mineral powder that is packed with Goji berries, which provide antioxidant protection, plus pure gold- which gives the skin a bright finish. Although it is a loose powder, the formula is housed in a spill proof jar that you simply twist to provide you with just enough for one perfect application.
For a reasonably priced mineral makeup, try L'Oreal's 'Bare Natural' powdered mineral foundation. This gentle mineral makeup has an almost creamy texture and gives the skin a lovely luminous finish – plus it comes in six different colours, from deep bronze through to alabaster.
Mineral makeup does not stop at foundation – minerals have found there way into luminous blushers and eyeshadows, plus luscious lipsticks and glosses. For the purest mineral makeup available, check out Jane Iredale's extensive range. My favourite is her pressed shimmer powder in 'Moonglow', a combination of bronze and gold that can be used on the eyes, cheeks or body, adding an instant, pure mineral glow!
