Maya Silwood stars in FNZ’s first ever fashion editorial!

The Power of Creative Collaboration in the Aotearoa Fashion Industry — a movement worth celebrating for the local creative community at large.

At a time when fashion editorials in Aotearoa have become few and far between, we’re proud to spotlight the kind of raw, emerging creative collaboration that reminds us of the power of visual storytelling. The golden age of New Zealand fashion editorial may feel like a distant memory, but moments like this prove that the spirit hasn’t gone anywhere – it’s just finding new voices.

Led by photographer and creative director Anastasiya Konstantine Baranova and model/stylist Maya Silwood, this editorial is a testament to self-expression, collaboration, and the unglamorous hustle behind meaningful fashion work. With contributions from makeup artist Shane Cyrus, assistant Felix Jackson, and a thoughtfully curated mix of local and international designers, this team represents the next wave of talent pushing boundaries and keeping the editorial flame alive. We’re honoured to showcase their work.

This shoot is a powerful reminder of the beauty that can emerge when passionate creatives come together for the sake of artistry, not algorithms.

Maya Silwood – Model and Stylist @mayasilwood

“In an industry that often strips away individuality in favour of trends, this editorial highlights the importance of staying true to yourself, your work, and your creative vision. It speaks to the power of collaboration in Aotearoa fashion community, where photographers, models, stylists, and makeup artists come together to create something unique.

“For many creatives, the fashion industry can be both exhilarating and demanding. There’s an unspoken hustle, so much of what we do requires investing in ourselves long before we see the results. From photographers to designers, makeup artists to models, we all take on unpaid projects to refine our craft, build our portfolios, and create work that feels true to us. Shoots like this are a reminder that some of the most meaningful work happens when there is no brief to follow, only the shared vision of a team coming together to create something unique.”

“As a model, I’ve been fortunate to work with so many incredible creatives, but often, the role is about bringing someone else’s vision to life. This shoot was different. Working with Anya on the styling allowed me to express myself in a way I don’t often get to, telling a story through clothing and drawing from pieces that truly inspire me. Pulling garments from Paloma Wool at Public Library was a special moment, blending international influences with some of New Zealand’s most exciting labels. Fashion, to me, is a language of its own, and having the opportunity to shape the narrative through styling made this shoot even more special.”

“Each person involved in this project brought their own experiences and creative vision, all shaped by the realities of being in this industry. From the emotional highs of collaboration to the grind of constant self-investment, this shoot was a testament to the power of staying true to yourself and your artistry. Fashion is about expression, connection, and individuality, and this editorial is a reflection of our work as a creative navigating this industry.”

Anya Konstantine Baranova – Photographer and Creative Director @anastasiyakonstantine

“Test shoots have always allowed me to express my creativity and hone my skills fully. As a photographer and creative director, I assemble a vision and collaborate with a talented team to share my perspective through a lens.”

“The benefits certainly outweigh the sacrifices we make, which can feel big sometimes. We showcase our talents on social media and in our portfolios. Releasing our content not only gives our peers insight into our latest works but also opens up professional opportunities with brands and agencies.

In those moments, the long drives around Tamaki Makaurau to get from location to location, the near mishap of being locked in a cemetery at 9 p.m., and spending my last paycheck on film development all feel worthwhile. We also have an opportunity to connect; we talk about our goals, what inspires us, and life.”

These experiences allow us to carve out a space in this industry, demonstrate that we have something valuable to say, and make a meaningful impact that mutually benefits the whole team of creatives involved.”

Shane Cyrus – Hair and Makeup Artist @shanecyrus

“For this editorial, the concept was inspired by the locations themselves, with all makeup applied on-site in front of the season’s most lively blooms. For the makeup, I opted for a soft, matte finish with subtle washes of colour to maintain a natural look. The tones were selected either to complement or contrast with Maya’s features, ensuring they would pop in the most flattering way. Her hair was kept youthful and effortless, adding to the overall feel of the shoot.

The collaborative nature of this project was invaluable. You never know what you might learn, who you might meet, or what opportunities might arise when working alongside others who share the same passion for creation, and really just want to collaborate for the love of it”.

Felix Jackson –  Photography Assistant @felixrjack

“Making connections within the industry is important, and through fostering them you can form symbiotic and meaningful relationships. Being able to assist on this shoot meant meeting new creatives while contributing to the execution of the vision. Small roles can make a big difference in uplifting the next generation and executing work with finesse.”
