Makeup Trend 2011: Colour

The best thing about this trend is that literally anyone can join in. You simply taylor it to suit you. The key thing to keep in mind when looking at runway images as a reference for your own makeup is to understand it as art, and then boil it down to its simplest element; in this case, colour. The whole point is to be expressive and creative with your look, so definitely one to have a play with. Here’s three looks you can try on!

Soft and Sultry
Use a cream eyeliner in a teal, lilac or emerald green and line the upper lashline and waterline. Smudge this out using a small brush or cotton bud. Using the same brush, sweep a similar coloured eyeshadow over the lids, blending up from the lashline and fading out into the skin. Opt for an eyeshadow with a pearly finish or sheen as you want the intensity of colour to remain right at the lashline but be nicely blended out. Finish off with black mascara and nude lips.

Bright and Bubbly
Want to try out this look but not that confident? Start with colour on the lips. Opt for brighter tones – orange based reds, fuchsia, raspberry etc. To keep it modern, keep it matte. If the lipcolour itself isn’t super matte, just blot your lips with a tissue after applying. Start off by exfoliating and moisturizing the lips, using a lip scrub. Then line and fill in the lips first in a similar coloured pencil. Now apply the lipcolour, blot with a tissue and reapply.  Seems like a process but this will help prevent colour bleeding, fading and smudging.

Colour Junkie
Apply an eyelid primer to the lids to intensify the colour and give it longevity. Using a flat eyeshadow brush press on a bold bright matte colour all over the lids, up to the crease of the eye (yellow, blue, purple, green, coral). Using a matte black, or a darker version of the original colour, define the outer corner of the crease by sweeping the brush back and forth to lightly blend the colours together slightly. Also take this darker colour along the bottom lashline. Line the top lashline with black liquid liner and finish with mascara. Pair this with a very sheer gloss in a contrasting colour for impact.

These are just three ways to wear colour but there are so many more. Find the colour you like best by experimenting in store. The only thing I will say to be careful of is using red around the eyes and blue on the lips, but other than that go for gold!
