Maggie Marilyn’s Spectacular Debut

Looks from Maggie Marilyn’s debut collection. Images supplied.

Maggie Marilyn has made the kind of impressive debut that many young designers dream of with her fresh young label stocked on luxury e-tailer Net-A-Porter in its first season, which is an exciting first for a New Zealand brand. Designer Maggie Hewitt graduated from design school Whitecliffe College last year and launched her label last month with the help of fashion consultant Jo Knight who is now working in partnership with Hewitt. Knight, who had previously had a successful fashion career in London, introduced Hewitt to several international buyers and media earlier in the year who were swayed by the label’s directional look and sublime craftsmanship. The successful duo made the trip to Paris Fashion Week earlier this month to further Maggie Marilyn’s relationships in the fashion industry and with the first collection quickly selling out, the sky really is the limit for this brand.

Back here in New Zealand, Maggie Marilyn’s exclusive stockist is The Shelter in Ponsonby who have had a positive response to the label’s confident first collection. It’s easy to see by looking at these images what has everyone so enchanted too, the combination of clever tailoring with a whimsical femininity is a powerful combination. The raw-edged construction, luxurious fabrics and alluring textures make for pieces that are modern, fascinating and truly covetable. The blush pink that runs through the collection is definitely having a moment which is likely to last for a while yet.

At the heart of the business is a desire to produce clothing that is considerate of the environment with an emphasis on ethical practices and sustainability. The clothes are meant to not only be beautiful but made to last so that your favourite piece will still be a favourite in several seasons time. Maggie Marilyn are clear in their vision, although Hewitt’s proclivity for being a dreamer adds a lightness and charm to the design direction of the brand. With the likes of Vogue already singing the label’s praises, we can’t wait to see what’s next for Maggie Marilyn.
