Maggie Marilyn recently released the brand’s beautiful Season 10 collection which is full of gorgeous looks that have an ethos of sustainability at their core. It’s hard to believe the brand designed by Maggie Hewitt is celebrating 10 seasons already, the designer’s first collection launched in late 2016 to rapturous reviews and was inspired by her study of sustainability in the fashion industry.
Four years in and Maggie Marilyn has produced every collection ethically in New Zealand sticking to the brand’s sustainable principles and developing a line of essential pieces called Somewhere which launched late last year and is designed to be fully circular.
For Season 10 it’s clear the Maggie Hewitt has matured as a designer and while her pieces still have a wistful romanticism there is a sleekness and quiet confidence that has replaced the layered ruffles and more voluminous silhouettes of previous seasons. The added maturity to her range is to be expected considering she was just 23 when launching her first collection and like everyone her tastes have evolved over time and with more experience.
From the beginning, Maggie has been inspired by the natural environment, for her it always comes back to a feeling and trying to evoke the emotion of the woman she aspires to be or the woman she envisions wearing the clothing – not what she does but who she is. Her mood also influences her design and there is an inherent sense of joy that always comes through in her clothing.
While popular shapes like her midi-length dresses in bias cut styles and high collared shirting have returned this season there are also some new pieces of great interest too. In particular the Sunday Kind of Love Bolero and Loyal to You Dress with their rows of covered buttons are fresh stand out looks and were inspired by the designer and her team looking at 18th and 19th century fashion. They were drawn into the emphasized waists and beautiful hand work of the dresses, jackets and waistcoats which when translated into modern, wearable looks became the elegant ivory pieces that still have the formality of their inspiration but are chic and appealing for today’s woman.
Season 10 sees Maggie Marilyn continue to shine brightly and no doubt the brand’s next steps forward on their sustainability journey will be just as inspirational as their beautiful clothing.
