Luna & Rose have brought back their Golden Giveback jewellery recycling programme. Images supplied.
Following the success of Luna & Rose‘s Golden Giveback jewellery recycling programme last year, the brand have brought the project back for 2021. From now until 31st March 2021 people can send their old silver, gold and brass jewellery that would otherwise have gone to landfill to be melted down and remade into new pieces. The customer gets vouchers that they can spend on the brand’s online store and it brings the brand another step closer to achieving circularity.
Between August and September 2020, Luna & Rose collected 948gm of sterling silver (which can go on to make around 130 new necklaces or 215 rings), 39g of solid gold and 17,911gm of brass. Rosie Shelton, founder of Luna & Rose, is aiming to close the loop on raw materials used to make jewellery and instead promote a circular option that is win-win for the customer and the environment.
Customers wanting to participate in the Golden Giveback Project gather up their jewellery and after filling out the special returns form on the Luna & Rose website, send their gold, silver and/or brass jewellery to Luna & Rose. Items being donated must be made of gold, silver or brass and can be from any brand. Luna & Rose then inspect the jewellery and send it away to be repurposed. Donated silver and gold jewellery is melted down in-house and used by the brand’s artisanal crafters to create new Luna & Rose pieces. All brass jewellery is donated to be recycled by a fellow brass-smith in Bali. Online store vouchers for Luna & Rose’s website are sent out after the donated jewellery has been assessed and weighed.
Currently, Luna & Rose uses recycled silver in all their collections, sourcing it from Thailand and Indonesia. Their refinery in Thailand takes pre-used silver, laptops, computers and iPhones, before extracting the silver and purifying it. All solid gold products from Luna & Rose are made to order in New Zealand, using recycled solid gold sourced and cast locally. Head to Luna & Rose’s website to find out more about their jewellery recycling programme. Achieving a fashion system that is more circular, minimises waste and reduces our impact on the planet is better for everyone.
