2023 has been quite the year for New Zealand’s queen of lipstick Karen Murrell. The innovative beauty brand kicked things up a gear this year, launching a new sellout collection and making news around the world by unveiling a new lipstick formula made using ground-breaking keratins from New Zealand wool. So it comes as no surprise that Karen is looking forward to some downtime over the Christmas holiday season.
What’s your favourite way to relax/recharge over the Christmas period?
I would love to tell you I adore running, but in truth, I lie in the sun, swim in the sea, and watch Netflix eating everything that I should not, and it’s wonderful.
What you’re most looking forward to celebrating this Christmas?
Honestly, it has been a year of mental survival this year. In all areas of business, there have been delays and further delays that implicate all areas of your brand. This year I will be celebrating that my feet are on the ground and Karen Murrell lipstick is still on the lips of many women. That is my biggest gift.

What has been a particularly memorable highlight of 2022 regarding the Karen Murrell brand?
Our new sellout collection, Island Goddess, which was my first range of lip tints. The collection completely sold out within two weeks. I still do not believe it! The four new Lip Tints capture the nourishing benefits of my Moisture Stick and are infused with a hint of subtle, buildable colour and they smell simply divine. They will be restocked in January again.
What has been one of the most valuable life/business lessons learned through 2022?
This year in September, my beloved much-loved sister to my other Dad, Melissa Ross, died unexpectedly of asthma. Melissa and I have worked together in pant-wetting laughter for more than 15 years. Melissa showed me the art of laughter, to be a great Mum, and that life is so short. I love her and miss her dearly.

What are your go-to skin/beauty products for summer skincare and beauty?
I have a new beauty product that I am buying all my girlfriends for Christmas. I use it as a body-face cream, however, I get stopped so often for the fragrance. It is addictive and I’m really enjoying using this little gem I found.
I also absolutely love The Virtue’s range of fine fragrances; currently, I’m wearing Narcosis.
And this summer you will find me wearing my new Kera Kisses, which is the first lipstick to harness ground-breaking, keratin-infused technology. It’s infused with ultra-fine keratin powder, which is undetectable in the application of the lipstick and is incredibly soft, completely non-gritty, and applies like a very smooth, balm-like lipstick. It feels incredibly soft and nourishing to wear and provides lips with next-level moisturisation, which is perfect for summer days especially as the beach, sea, sun, and sand can be dehydrating for our lips and skin.
Is there a sneak peek into what we can expect from Karen Murrell in 2023?
Further extensions in my new Lip Tint collections. I am so excited to expand this range, particularly after the amazing feedback and reviews they have received.
