Auckland artist and designer Katie Battersby has just launched her stunning new winter collection called Wild Wood. The designer is known for her intelligent take on fashion and has created a gorgeous range that draws its inspiration from the beauty and mystery of the wilderness and nature. “There is something about the woods that conjures up romantic notions of girls in red visiting grannies with wolves at their heels,” adds Katie Battersby. “For centuries writers have been obsessed with woods, forests and bushland. From fairy tales and poetry to gothic horror and self-awakenings, forests are rich in literary references.”
Battersby has continued to experiment with fabrication techniques through printing, stitching and appliqué that complement her creative designs. She has printed her own bespoke fabric which is wonderfully utilised on silk scarves and tops adding another layer of interest and beauty to her looks. The collection is designed to be a transeasonal winter to spring range that layers and takes the wearer through the cooler months into the nicer weather. This time she has done her first knit which is a sublime thick sweater in mint green and black that has a clever lichen effect.
Hand painted leaves and lichen make for suitably botanical motifs on crisp silk shirts and casually draped scarves. The range also features cosy merino tops and dresses, wide legged corduroy trousers, pencil skirts, pussy bow blouses and utilitarian denim shirt dresses. Each piece is made as a limited edition and is designed and handcrafted in New Zealand. Katie Battersby’s Wild Wood has the perfect wardrobe additions for wherever your next adventure takes you.
