Karen Walker is a busy brand at the moment, following hot on the heels of the Runaway Girl with a Pearl jewellery collection earlier in the week is the new Shadow Play eyewear collection. Walker’s well known for her unique eyewear that has a large global following and this time she has shifted the focus of the eyewear to be a ‘beauty shading tool’ meaning that the softly coloured lenses and clever frame shapes create interesting shadows on the face.
“The idea is that there’s this beautiful interplay with light on the skin as the lenses bounce back a colour wash and the frames create this graphic, playful sense of structure to super-enhance your beauty look,” says Karen. It’s a clever idea and is brought beautifully to life by the individual shapes that feature rimless, flat lenses suspended on barely-there metal bridges over the nose to create a sense of levitation. The shadows of which create and accentuate angularity aided by warm tones and reflective lenses in amber and gold. The mix of metal/acetate frames take things a step further with the Sadie style creating a sharp brow shape in tortoiseshell, black, tan or ecru.
The fascinating campaign for this Shadow Play collection was shot by talented photographer Harry Were in Sydney. Each image was taken in the sunshine enabling the photographer to quite literally play with shadows on the model’s bare skin. “We love that naturalness that Harry brings to her work,” adds Karen. In keeping with Harry’s style of photography, the images were shot on film and are un-retouched so that the natural beauty of the images and the dynamic light play draw you in.
Shadow Play is available now from Karen Walker stores, selected stockists including Net-A-Porter, Liberty, David Jones and online.
