We recently came across new boho jewellery label Beau & River on Facebook and were charmed by their gorgeous marine-themed jewellery collection. It's the first collection by designer and founder, Justine Baker, who recently launched the label after seeing a gap in the market for the type of jewellery she wanted to wear. Having a background in fashion and an eye for contemporary designs with a whimsical appeal she created Beau & River, which is quickly gaining fans who love her free-spirited pieces.
We chatted to Justine to find out more about her label, what inspires her and where she sees Beau & River going.
How did Beau and River come about and where did the name come from?
The idea for Beau & River started while chatting to my father in law Mike Baker (who is an extremely talented jeweller!). I felt like there was a lack of quality beachy/boho style jewellery made here in New Zealand and so we started designing Beau & River together. As for the name, I wanted to name it after my son Beau. River represents the spirit of our designs.
What has the response been like so far?
The response has been amazing! I'm so blown away, it's really exciting to know people adore the jewellery as much as I do!
What are your favourite pieces from your first collection and why?
It's so hard to choose but our opal rings are my absolute favourite – I'm obsessed with them. The opal is just the most beautiful gemstone, the colours in them are incredible. Also our new crab ring – it's insane!

Describe your personal style and how it influences your brand?
I have always loved dressing like a wild gypsy and still do! But since becoming a mum my style has relaxed a lot. I need to be comfortable. That's why I love Beau & River so much. It works for day to day and gives me that bohemian fix even when I'm in a t-shirt and jeans.
Where do you get inspiration from?
There is something so magical about mermaids and I drew a lot of inspiration from them with this first collection. Ultimately I just imagine what I would really love to wear!.
What's the best thing about running your own label and deciding the creative direction of your brand?
When I was little I used to spend hours sketching wedding dresses, my dream wardrobe etc, so having the freedom to design jewellery that I truly love and seeing it come to life is a dream. It's so rewarding and I'm so proud of what we've created so far!
What are your tips for choosing jewellery?
For me I want quality, something I know is going to last. It should also make you feel special. This might sound silly but when I wake up I get so excited to get up and put mine on!
What are your plans for Beau and River and what's next for you?
More gemstones, crystals & beautiful jewellery. I have so many ideas, I can't wait to share them!
