Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) is an explosion of vibrant colour and flair but in 2013 it was the darkness that made for a statement experience.

FashioNZ’s reporter Craig Lawson was there to capture all the action.

A show stopper was delivered on opening night by Milliner Richard Nylon who presented a unique runway experience.

The models were clad in beautiful full lace black dresses to ensure all eyes were on the unique white creations they each adorned.

To close the show the models lined the runway and then, without warning, the entire venue was plunged into darkness as if a blackout had occurred. Suddenly his beautiful white designs were brought to life as they lit up in neon hues!

This set the scene for MSFW 2013 and kicked off a packed fashion schedule. By day, the magnificent glass housed MSFW Hub was the place to be, with free runway shows, style workshops and light refreshments to keep the fashionistas energised.

As day turned to night the historic Melbourne Town Hall played host to the designer runway series.

The runway backdrop was a futuristic, digitally enhanced screen that flicked between images of voyeuristic 3D effects. The changing set brought to life the vision of each designer.

Let’s talk trends!

The tables of fashion have turned this season as menswear is all about colour while women are opting for classic black and white. The magic of monochrome has cast a spell on women’s fashion this season.

This key trend represents a modern elegance with a playful vibe.

Manning Cartel showcased key pieces featuring classic black and white with the stand out being a relaxed playsuit. White floor length dresses took this war against colour to another level. Neo Dia showed the white flowing gowns of the season that will ensure to be the stand out at black tie galas.

For an edgy style – Alice McCall delivered structured shoulders on sweet embroidered summer dresses. Alexi Freeman was the rebel of the week and delivered an outstanding fluro collection with belted jumpsuits, colourful tights and chic summer dresses.

Limedrop, Alexi Freeman

Hot pink raised the temperature on the catwalk as Yojin Bae delivered cocktail dresses with panelled crossover tops and skirts in contrasting black. Limedrop showed the love with their gorgeous mirrored heart shaped sunglasses that reflected beautifully on the catwalk.

For menswear – it’s the summer of colour!

Get those sunnies ready as the future of menswear is looking bright with this season’s electric mix of blazing colour. Arthur Galan AG made a splash with sharp coloured suits at MSFW. It was a dazzling introduction to their new collection. To mix it up, team with a white shirt to make the suit pop!

Blue is the power colour for suits this season, take your time and find the best shade for you. Jack London continues to design edgy suits with attitude. Lookout for their sharp tailoring that delivers an electric street vibe. Team with their polka dot shirt for a sense of fun!

The fashionable week drew to a close with the first Resort Runway to be held at MSFW. It was a beautiful mix of colour and summer styling for both men and women. Menswear label Franks sent buff models down the catwalk carrying surfboards that brought the beach to the runway – ending the week on a sexy high!
