Harris Tapper recently released the brand’s Pre Fall 2020 collection which is inspired by classic and contemporary artists whose work spans poetry, painting and photography. Designers Sarah Harris Gould and Lauren Tapper have five seasons under their belt now and have thoughtfully expanded their brand from the first collection of shirting through to considered seasonal collections.
Drawing on cherished cultural touchstones, Harris Tapper’s latest range is called PRELUDE and features mid-century details and undulating proportions. They have cleverly built on the functional tailoring and refined shirting that has come to their sartorial signature. This season continues the brand’s exploration of luxurious fabrics with heavy silk organza, 800gsm merlot wool and teddy cashmere teamed with crisp cottons and structured silk.
“One of our favourite images is a photograph by Annie Leibovitz of Agnes Martin sitting on the bed in her painting studio,” says co-founder Lauren Tapper of the brand’s inspiration. “When she said to Annie, ‘I sit here and wait to be inspired,’ Annie thought, ‘isn’t that what we all do? ‘ Drawing on the idea of the creative process itself, we wanted our collection to evoke the same sense artists feel when inspiration strikes.”
Familiar pieces like the Kate Shirt and Soft Slacks make a return this season in fresh hues while Harris Tapper fans will love the new shapes like the ethereal Sonn Topp and elegant Wes Shirt. The designers view the new range as both an ode to Harris Tapper’s beginnings, and an indication of what is to come. While their initial women’s shirting line was a success Sarah and Lauren have been excited to build their repertoire over five seasons, partly as a reaction to the demands of their customers, but also as a result of their own creative evolutions.
“We started Harris Tapper with an aim to provide beautifully cut, high-quality shirting that can be worn year round and the full collections that have followed are simply an expansion of that,” says co-founder, Sarah Harris Gould. “It’s never going to be overly trend driven, we are committed to designing timeless wardrobes for women that work with their lifestyles.”
PRELUDE is available exclusively at harristapper.com and from Muse Boutique Auckland, Caughley Wellington and styleassembly.co.nz.
