Guy of style – James Dobson

James Dobson is the designer of label jimmy D and coowner of Auckland boutique and online store Children of Vision. We love his design flair (not to mention his quick wit) and prise his style secrets from him:

Tell us about your style – what is your ‘look’? I guess it’s pretty much a uniform of super-sized baggy tops, bum covering tees, skinny pants, and a couple of long pendants (my D_luxe leather medicine pouch and Postweiler Hauber leather and metal pendant pretty much never come off!). Sometimes though head to toe black feels a little too serious, and I feel the need to bust out some pattern and/or even some colour!

What is your current favourite item of clothing? Other than my D_luxe medicine pouch and Postweiler Hauber pendant mentioned before it would be my Salvor Projects canvas boots. They are a canvas workboot with Velcro straps and are completely thrashable, I have already ordered myself another pair for next season…

Who is your favourite New Zealand designer? Tough choice! Too many to choose from! Margi from Nom*d has been amazingly supportive of my own label since its beginning, and she is a pretty darn inspiring lady. At the shop the NZ labels we carry are Deadly Ponies, Commence, Areez Katki and new for us is Company of Strangers – designer Sara Aspinal is really talented.

What will you be wearing this summer? Drop crotch tee shirting pants, baggy light cotton long tube tee’s, Colab sunglasses, Bernhard Willhelm six scents fragrance, and just generally trying to layer less.

What has been your biggest fashion mistake? A nasty polyester ensemble I remember buying for my 7th form graduation in a dizzying array of colours and patterns. Not pretty.

Jandals or loafers? Uh. Neither…

Boxers or briefs? Boxer briefs.

What is your favourite fashion purchase/garment/outfit of all times? My Nom*d belt that I’ve honestly had for about 10 years, and worn almost every day, and my ‘Lucifer tee’ from my own range that I layer everything over, it’s got a long shirt-tail like shaped hem and a button through placket at the hem. I wear them to death…

You would rather eat your own shirt than wear..? Boot leg jeans, frosted tips, tight tee shirts.
