Gal of style – Janelle Rennie

Janelle Rennie is the New Zealand PR superstar for PANDORA Jewellery, FashioNZ finds out her favourite designers, where she shops and her biggest fashion mistake.

Describe your personal style.
I’m far less ‘put together’ than I used to be. However I am feeling when I get dressed in the morning is usually reflected in what I’m wearing on any given day. Some days I love putting on a floaty summer dress and sandals, some days its distressed denim, studded belts and black, marl, black…

Where do you shop?
I travel a bit to Sydney for work as PANDORA’S offices are on the Northern Beaches, so I’m usually saving for my next splurge in Sydney these days. In Auckland it depends on what I’m looking for. If I need some great staples I’ll venture down to Newmarket usually… If I’m going vintage shopping it’s usually first stop Ponsonby… and if I want things that nobody else will have I always try boutique stores, especially when I’m out of Auckland.

Who is your favourite New Zealand/Australian designer?
Tough one. PANDORA has been doing a bit of a collaborative piece with ZAMBESI recently so I have a bit of a crush on the label right now… and Nom D. In Australia I’m always keeping an eye on Manning Cartell… I fell in lust with a dress of theirs last year, and it had sold out of my size across the country (there and here), I tried everything to get that dress, lust was unrequited… sigh…

What is your current favourite item of clothing?
I’ve got this fabulous black and silver studded belt from Politix… it’s a guys belt but they do small sizes because it’s a European store… and I’ve thrashed it over the last 6 months… everything from jeans to mini’s…. definitely my fav thing right now.

What is your best buy for Autumn?
A pair of over the knee, flat, black boots from the new Mi Piaci collection. They brought them in with only one in each size…so I got them 4 weeks ago and have been quietly looking forward to the colder stormy weather ever since…

What is your favourite fashion purchase/garment/outfit of all time?
I’ve inherited a knee length, cream faux fur coat from my great grandmother. It’s the most delicious, luxurious, glamorous Marilyn Munroe-esque coat you could possibly imagine. If my house was burning and I could only save one item… that coat would be it.

What has been your biggest fashion mistake?
I can think of a few… I generally think when I was younger I often made the mistake of dressing how others told me to dress, rather than wearing what I felt expressed how I was feeling. These days I don’t plan what I’m going to wear to anything… I just make sure I have a number of great pieces in my wardrobe so I can put on whatever I feel makes me feel great on that given day.

If you were invited to attend the Academy Awards, who would you ask to design a dress for you?
Easy: Marchesa.
Georgina Chapman has been called the queen of the red carpet gowns for some seasons now and every awards event there is a stand out Marchesa gown in her signature girly romance look using lace, organza, beading, tulle and ruffles that makes the best dressed list time and time again.

You would rather eat your own shirt than wear…
Something that completely goes against how I’m feeling today.
