The best skincare ingredients are going to be different for everyone’s individual skin type and needs, but like with most other trends, certain skincare ingredients will always have their time to shine. As studies are conducted, we are constantly finding new improvements in skincare and new ingredients that are great for the skin. In the age of TikTok and Instagram, it can be easy to get caught up in the hype with different trending ingredients and skincare products but sometimes certain new ingredients can be worth the hype. From our research we’ve found five skincare ingredients we think will be popular in 2022 and here is why.

Water-soluble CBD

CBD infused skincare products have been having a moment for a while now but studies have shown that CBD is hydrophobic, which means that it is very difficult for the ingredient to cross through the skin’s aqueous layer. By making this ingredient water-soluble and incorporating it into a water-based formula, this will make the CBD able to cross through this layer better than a CBD oil, giving it more efficiency.

Green Tea

Green Tea is touted for its antioxidant properties that are said to fight free radicals. Studies have also shown that Green Tea can reduce pigmentation, inflammation and even sebum production, due to its catechin (antioxidant) called EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate). This makes this ingredient wonderful for both anti-ageing and anti-acne products.

Niacinamide

This ingredient was popular in 2021 and we believe it will remain in the spotlight in 2022 as well. Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3 with antioxidant properties that are anti-inflammatory. This ingredient is used to improve wrinkles, skin texture and elasticity and hyperpigmentation. It can also brighten the skin and fight against acne while moderating oil production. It really is an all-around wonder ingredient.

Pre, Pro and Post Biotic skincare

Your skin is covered in bacteria and fungi that is called a Microbiome – The Microbiome has colonies of bacteria living on it that all need certain things to make them work properly. Prebiotics are like food for the good bacteria and help them to grow well. Probiotics are the living organisms that make up the microbiome and Postbiotics are the metabolic by-products of the bacteria. We need all three of these to work together to create a healthy Microbiome. Therefore, we will be seeing an increase in skincare products that contain Pre, Pro and Post Biotics.

Fermented ingredients

Fermented ingredients are going to be the next big thing in skincare. They are packed with postbiotics that are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and polysaccharides (this ingredient is responsible for the skins natural ability to hydrate and retain water). Fermented ingredients that can be found in skin care can help with wound healing, strengthening the skins barrier and reducing inflammation.
