Earth Day falls on 22 April and has been acknowledged as a day to create awareness of the Earth’s needs since 1970. The Earth is more than four billion years old and has seen five major ice ages, two of which homo sapiens have resided.
Spiritually, Earth Day is an opportunity to appreciate where we live in a greater scheme than our four walls and consider what we can do to contribute to a happier planet.
Our relationship with Mother Earth, Gaia, is a crucial investment like the relationships we choose to have in our lives with people or animals. It is a privilege to live here. Mother Earth will remain as we humans make a transition in and out through births and deaths and in the time we are here want to establish a connection with understanding her.
We can all help do our part in protecting the Earth. Here are five ‘missions’, or ways, that we can each play our part to help achieve change.
Mission 1: Our first mission is to maintain her as we would our own homes and our physical bodies.
Mission 2: Do your part – there are so many ways to do your part when it comes to looking after the Earth. Whether you choose to use charities to do the work for you or contribute by recycling; soft plastics are another important way of sorting out your rubbish, which requires collection and drop off. Bins are available in your local area, usually outside a supermarket. Composting and buying packaging-free food and buying sustainable products that plant trees are some easy ways to help.
Mission 3: Have a relationship with Mother Earth – spiritually, we all have a connection to her. Many know her weather patterns seem to be rapidly changing. She may seem unpredictable in her reactions, but she is responding to us and communicating with us all the time about what she needs. Disasters are devastating but much like life events, they can strengthen the future.
Mission 4: Awareness – while it’s easy to turn a blind eye to bigger events, it is important to have some knowledge on how to balance your carbon emissions and other issues facing the planet. Awareness helps us make small decisions every day towards a healthier, sustainable planet.
Mission 5: Leave a legacy – as a soul, we leave a legacy within us from all the memories and experiences we have in our life. The Earth has memories too. She is made up of crystals, minerals, rocks, and different living elements. She stores memories, and this is why scientists and researchers have so much information about what has happened to Earth over these last four billion years. Leave a legacy for the people who will inherit the Earth from us. Live your purpose with consideration and empathy and celebrate this Earth Day by adding something into your life to support her.
Small everyday rituals such as composting, recycling, minimising our waste and single-use items, supporting charities that are cleaning up our lands, waterways, and oceans, and the protection of native bushlands and habitats are a great place to start.
