The warmer months are just around the corner so it’s time to start thinking about a few of those key summer fashion trends, including eyewear, of course! We figured who better to talk to than an industry expert, so FashioNZ caught up with Rebecca Demetriou, senior buyer at Luxottica which owns OPSM and Sunglass Hut.
What are the three key trends in eyewear for summer 2013/2014?
Colour is even stronger this season. With all brands offering coloured sunglasses inspired by their Spring/Summer runway collections and such a plethora of options, there is a pair out there for every skin tone and outfit! Be it through the frame or the lens, colour is key this season. For eye-popping colour, choose Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana, for coloured lenses, Ray-Ban is simply amazing and, for sophisticated colour, check out Miu Miu.
Burberry $435
Embellished sunglasses are wildly popular this season. Whether it’s crystals, flowers or geometric prints, it seems the more avant-garde the better. Dolce & Gabbana is the one to watch, with incredible floral collections already in store and beautiful filigree designs to drop closer to summer.
Dolce & Gabbana $885
What’s more, mirrored sunglasses continue to emerge as a huge trend – one that’s great for both men and women. Initially inspired by the popular aviator trend, mirrored lenses will appear on all different sunglass shapes and there will be a wide range of colours such as red, blue, green, pink and orange. For the hottest mirrored looks check out Prada Linea Rossa, Ray-Ban and Vogue.
Emporio Armani $315
How have the shapes changed from what we saw last summer?
The cat-eye has evolved. It’s been reinvented to quirkier heights thanks to brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and Miu Miu. There are now so many cat-eye options – small, oversized, sharp or soft and there really is one to suit any face.
Miu Miu $600
In fact, finer, sleeker shapes are coming through such as the rimless cat-eye from Versace and the flat metal aviator by Ray-Ban.
Are the classic pieces such as the wayfarer and the aviator style still featuring as strongly as they have in previous seasons?
Yes, absolutely. These styles transcend trends and are timeless icons that are updated each season. They have been reinvented for this season with the introduction of new materials such as leather, fabric, volcanic rock, carbon fibre and solid gold. We can’t wait for the Ray-Ban ‘Ice-pops’ collection to go into store – a classic wayfarer style in gorgeous translucent sorbet colours such as watermelon, mint and grape. Also we have a new range of Ray-Ban aviators with coloured polarised lenses-my personal favourite!
Ray-Ban Aluminium Clubmasters $460.00
What key colours and patterns can we expect to see on frames?
In terms of frame colours, gold and silver are everywhere, whether it’s the entire frame, the arm or even just the embellishment. Blue and green also seem to be popular colour choices for both lens and frame; check out Burberry, Giorgio Armani and Vogue for examples.
Dolce & Gabbana $475
What is the ‘MUST’ have pair of sunnies that every girl must own this summer?
A clubmaster style or variation of this. Ray-Ban have just released the folding clubmaster (first at Sunglass Hut) and brands such as Prada and Emporio Armani have their own take on it. It’s such a versatile style that matches any outfit whether for a corporate, casual or cocktail event.
Ray-Ban Clubmaster $395
