Saben’s new collection pays homage to founder Roanne Jacobson’s time in The Big Apple
Wanderlust runs through the veins of Saben founder Roanne Jacobson, with five generations of family calling a different city home.
Living in NYC is bound to leave an impression, so it’s unsurprising that Saben’s AW23 collection is inspired by her time living in New York City.
After 28 years, three cities, and many miles travelled since living in Manhattan, the new Saben AW23 collection, named The Five Borough, pays homage to her time in The Big Apple.
The need to protect and empower yourself when embarking on a new chapter is something many women will relate to. It was this sense of protection that Roanne got from her years-old, much-loved tote.
Having it by her side when she landed in NYC, it was a talisman of sorts, providing the strength she needed. It was this sense of empowerment that she carried with her through the streets of uptown, downtown, the Bronx, and beyond, which inspired Ro to start her iconic brand.
“Being a woman travelling alone, the need for a sense of protection was strong. Some people get it from a pendant, an heirloom, or a hand-written note. For me, there was something about carrying a handbag that can be likened to carrying a talisman, simultaneously giving power and comfort, protecting me from and preparing me for the adventures ahead.”
Saben’s AW23 collection The Five Boroughs is a homage to the city where it all started. The colour palette of the big apple is clear to see. From the tree canopy of Central Park to the Brownstone facades of uptown and the vibrant yellow of the downtown taxis, the city left a lasting impact on Roanne.
New and noteworthy this season is Harlow, a shoulder bag silhouette adorned with gold chain detailing, making her the epitome of uptown elegance.
Shoulder bag silhouettes are a mainstay of this collection with Cassia and Claudette hitting the streets in seasonal new hues. Claudette has a new feature, a braided handle – swap her out for the crossbody strap for when you need to go hands-free.
Inspired by Brooklyn grunge, classic silhouettes Fifi, Tilly, Tilly’s Big Sis, and Lily are adorned with silver hardware. This heavy metal element is perfect for those in search of an alternative to Saben’s iconic gilded detailing.
For the first time, Fifi comes with her own chunky chain and leather handle – for those who want to re-live their post-punk era. Odile also has her own silver and black crossbody strap.
The hue inspired by the bright lights of the big city is citrine. A vibrant sunny hue to ensure you stand out in the crowds features on Birdie, Odile, and Lily, adding a bright pop to any ensemble.
Roanne’s love of travel is apparent with carryall bag Milan and Roma being released in Prussian Blue.
