Zambesi NZFW 2013 Review

Zambesi have a fond place in the hearts of New Zealanders, who admire the brand for their unique take on androgynous fashion that is inherently kiwi and proudly made here.

Being one of only two labels to have shown at every New Zealand Fashion Week, it was with anticipation that the full house of fashion fans waited for what was to be another strong showing from the revered brand.

As the giant white flats slid back to reveal the models line-up, the audience were delighted to see the flats completely withdraw to the sides, opening up the entire backstage area to the full view of the crowded room.

It was absolutely fascinating to see the creative teams hovering around the models as they stood waiting to walk the runway, small teams of hair and makeup artists applying finishing touches, fixing up outfits and making sure that every look was perfect before it hit the catwalk.

It definitely added another exciting dimension to the show, especially as backstage is often a place of chaos and drama, yet Zambesi’s backstage was remarkably serene, possibly because it was in full view of everyone, but also because one imagines Zambesi are supremely organised and confident about these things.

But on to the fashion, which began with lots of utilitarian looks for men and women in Zambesi’s signature dark tones, accompanied by sleek suiting for the guys and cleverly constructed dresses in demure lengths for the women.

As the collection progressed a fern motif appeared in a welcome nod to Kiwiana, it was set in greens and charcoals which were another great reference to our homeland. A charming shade of sky blue also featured in the colour palette which you could imagine may reference the stunning skies seen in New Zealand.

Fabrics ranged from very wearable winter wools to more futuristic high-shine materials, which made for a very modern looking range, enhanced by brilliant tailoring from the Zambesi team. A few unexpected hints of bright colour, in the form of a scarlet dress and a charming red and black painterly print lightened the mood.

The fantastic fashion on the runway beautifully complemented by dramatically slicked hair parted in several directions, accented by glossy red lips.

A fittingly fabulous end to the first day of NZFW, no doubt Zambesi’s sophisticated collection will be high on the wishlists of many New Zealanders for Winter 2014, including mine.
