Salasai NZFW 2014 Review

Classical piano music set the tone for a reflective experience at Salasai.

The collection entitled ‘Self Portrait’ was a stunning take on the label’s signature androgynous style, mixing fluid silhouettes with more structured pieces to create a wearable range of contemporary cool pieces.

The show opened with a single model slowly processing the runway clad in a relaxed white cotton shirt and matching long skirt, the look was clean and almost angelic in its crisp beauty.

The outfits that followed were from a subtle colour palette of nude, blush and burgundy with monochromatic looks and splashes of brighter colour to add interest.

As always the fabrics were luxurious and cleverly draped; silks, cottons and sheers contrasted with chunkier knits and warm wools.

Floaty dresses competed with over-sized preppy cardigans whilst tailored trousers and boxier jackets added to the chic appeal of the collection and the sizeable floral brooches were a lovely feminine touch.

It was nice to see model stalwarts Penny Pickard and Ngahuia Williams on the runway, the fact this is Salasai’s first collection of only womenswear meant a strong line-up of women representing the collection, which was a pleasure to see.

Simple chignons and elegantly bronzed faces perfectly complemented the stellar range that was also accented by cool sunglasses for a laidback feel. It was definitely a confident collection from Salasai and a nod towards an even brighter future for the successful local label.
