The second day of New Zealand Fashion Week 2017 began with a brilliant installation from Rachel Mills who made her official NZFW debut this year. We adored her off-schedule installation called Wavey at the tail end of last year’s event which showcased her modern take on 80s womenswear. Unsurprisingly we were excited to see what the talented young designer would bring to the table this time.
Mills showcased her Autumn/Winter 2018 collection called Neo Kind in a unique installation that cleverly utilised tubes of cardboard to create modern art-style furniture. Each model posed confidently at her own stations in a sublime collection of contemporary womenswear that featured well-tailored suiting and charming ruffle details.
Roomy silhouettes gave the collection an eighties feel and was a relaxed but in control take on power dressing. Waists were accentuated with tie details as were wrists. Wide-legged pants and wrap skirts were a perfect match for beautifully detailed shirting with tie fronts and wrap style-tops.
The overall collection was fluid and elegant with each look complemented by black beaded jewellery in varying sizes. Nude fish net stockings, red stained lips and nails added a sensual feel to the looks. Crisp white, navy and grey with pops of red made for a poised colour palette for this polished collection. Definitely a sophisticated debut by Rachel Mills and a suitably chic way to begin a busy day of fashion.
Beauty notes: Beautiful stained red lips and nails.
Soundtrack: Mellow sounds with a chilled out beat.
Hot item: Tailored suiting.
