Nom*D NZFW 2014 Review

Fashion week kicked off with a bang this morning, as Nom*D opened proceedings with a collection fittingly titled NOISE.

The assembled fashion crowd were ushered into the main runway space devoid of its usual seating and asked to stand along one side as a lineup of masked drummers faced the audience.

As each drummer began to play the space lit up and a driving beat saw the first models in moody long coats and helmet inspired headwear, by Marmalade Hats, take to the runway.

What followed was a series of fashion warriors in long, layered knits and coats, as if heading off to battle in Dunedin’s chilly climes. Dark and edgy with a twist is what Nom*D does best and this collection was no exception.

Navy and black made up the majority of the collection with stark white adding contrast and a graphic Nom*D motif making for monochromatic  pieces. The addition of printed namesake socks were a cute touch.

Textured knits with trailing hems were complemented by boxy jackets and wide-legged pants, the look was infinitely cool with tonnes of attitude. Long pinafore style dresses with buckled details at the hip added a nineties vibe, off-set by the classic Doc Marten boots on the models feet.

Makeup was pared back to neutral with ears painted black for a striking look although the hair took centrestage as its crisp lacquered layers created a futuristic feel.

Strong and streetwise, NOISE is a collection that conveys the essence of Nom*D and will no doubt please the label’s many fans. Dark, moody and casually cool, it perfectly conveys winter in the southern reaches of NZ.
