Ivory and Stone and Mallo’s joint show celebrated both the labels’ first New Zealand Fashion Week debuts. Showcasing bridalwear and occasion wear respectively, the labels both showcased delicate collections that were underpinned by serious craftsmanship.

In an opening sequence fitting for a debutante showcase, 10 models emerged in dreamy white and cream gowns. They walked in graceful unison to face the audience at the top of the runway, revealing Ivory and Stone’s stunning bridal collection. From necklines to hemlines, each bridal gown was completely unique. No two elements were repeated across the collection, yet the perfectly considered detailing and balanced proportions united each of the pieces.

One by one the models walked down the runway, revealing the detail and craftsmanship adorning each of the gowns. There were heavily embellished numbers, with strands of eads cascading down the front panels, as well as a two-textured gown boasting frost-patterned sequence of sparkly beads mixed with asymmetrical panelling and drapery. On the other end of the spectrum, there were gowns featuring just a touch of sparkle (a sleeveless, lightly-beaded beaded boat-necked number with a billowing petal skirt, being a prime example) or gowns that let a beautiful silhouette and fabric take centre stage. An absolute stand-out was a simple white mermaid skirt paired with a cropped bralette, made entirely from beaded pearls.

As the last of the bridal gowns sashayed backstage, the lights dimmed, the music reginited and a parade of jewel tones emerged as Mallo’s collection took to the runway. Occasion wear made from rich emeralds, royal blues, magentas, olive and terracotta toned taffetas were made for a bright yet opulent colour palette. These colours were inspired by the designer’s admiration of the New Zealand spring time, and were lustrous as the runway lights illuminated them.

Inspired by the designers’ own culture, a hint of traditional Filipino traditional dress was splashed into the collection in the form of sculptural, flat-facing sleeves. Not only did it add an exotic touch to the look, it was also an excellent showcase of the skillful craftsmanship that Mallo displayed across the collection. From full A-line dresses, to statement bell sleeves and structured dress-pants, the high quality craftsmanship gave each piece beautiful body, presence and sculpturalirty.

With embellishments kept slick and simple through the occasional black sequin and lace floral applique, it was the garment colours that took centre stage. Colour-blocking and solid-colour garments explored in this collection and let the modern, yet romantic silhouettes take centre stage.
